You already know what it is, let's get this bread.
Hey there,
Happy Monday and I hope you had a great weekend!
In this week's issue:
The US Goes Cyber
Plop, Fizz, Wiz, BANG
Stock Don’t Only Go Up
The United States Marshals Service (USMS) got breached, Wiz becomes the largest and highest-valued cybersecurity unicorn ever (more below), the US Commerce Department gets back to work on an Executive Order to limit foreign hackers’ ability to use U.S. cloud infrastructure, and the Biden administration released a US National Cybersecurity Strategy.
Earnings Report
Okta (OKTA) - beat its Q4 2023 earnings revenue on the backs of an increased focus on controlling the user and customer identity spaces at companies. Investors were still expecting rocketship growth 🚀, though, and the stock got punished after hours since the forward look wasn’t as strong as before.
Zscaler (ZS) - smashed its earnings revenue but mentioned it had trouble with macroeconomic pressures. New customer growth was down and YoY and those kinds of stats scare investors and the stock fell 11%+ last week.
While the cybersecurity industry itself is somewhat recession resistant, this latest round of earnings reports and subsequent market reaction shows that not all sectors within cyber are weighted equally. What is clear to me, however, identity and access management (IAM) is more resilient than others.
This will cause investors and VCs to be a bit more discerning on where they put their future capital since not all of cyber is “stock only go up” anymore.
Onward to this week's issue.

A must for businesses operating in CA or processing Californians' data
The CPRA adds new user and employee rights to the CCPA while removing the noncompliance grace period. But with the right data management platform, businesses can limit risks, ease privacy burdens and maintain user trust while making daily compliance tasks easier to handle. Make all that possible before the CPRA takes full effect.
